The tiles in San Telmo didn’t seem like deliberate decorations.

Most of them were set along corners of walls, by stairways, or under arcades—

as if they’d been placed there long ago, never really maintained, never replaced.

The patterns were somewhat symmetrical, yet not perfectly neat.

The colors had faded under the sun, which somehow made them feel even more pleasant.

That afternoon, when we were tired from walking, we sat by the roadside eating ice cream.

On the wall beside us were a few tiles—slightly broken, but with rather cute colors.

Nothing extraordinary, yet I still remember that little corner.
