We kept heading south — an entire hour without seeing another car,

only a few guanacos standing on a distant slope, watching us.

They didn’t seem to care much,

as if they were part of the scenery — the true owners of this land.

We sat in front of the car in a daze,

trying to imitate them, using our eyes to feel the land.
